CHAN 2024: Host Uganda Seeks Good Start as Guinea Faces Familiar Foes Niger in Group C Opener

Host nation Uganda kicks off its TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 campaign on Monday with a high-profile Group C clash against Algeria, aiming to finally break their group-stage curse in front of passionate home fans at the Mandela National Stadium, Kampala.

Head coach Morley Byekwaso believes the Cranes can draw strength from home support as they seek their first-ever progression beyond the group phase in what is their seventh consecutive CHAN appearance.

“Playing in front of our supporters gives us confidence and we are determined not to let them down,” said Byekwaso. “As hosts, we must give our best knowing the fans are behind us.”

Algeria, 2022 finalists, enter the contest as strong contenders, boasting a disciplined defence and a creative midfield led by Ahmed Kendouci. Coach Madjid Bougherra said his side is prepared to handle the pressure and compete at the highest level.

Meanwhile, Group C’s second fixture will see Guinea face West African neighbours Niger in Kampala.

Both teams know each other well, having met three times since 2012, including a thrilling 2-2 draw at the 2016 edition.

Guinea, semi-finalists in 2020, aim to leverage their fluid, possession-based style with Horoya AC duo Morlaye Sylla and Yakhouba Gnagna Barry leading the charge.

Niger, fourth-placed in 2022, plans to rely on tactical discipline and counter-attacks, guided by captain Mohamed Abdourahmane and creative midfielder Moussa Issa Djibrilla.

A win for any of the four teams in these opening fixtures will be crucial in navigating what is considered one of the tournament’s toughest groups, with South Africa also vying for a quarter-final spot.

Both matches will be played on Monday at the Mandela National Stadium, with Uganda vs Algeria headlining the day’s action.
