The 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) “PAMOJA” enters a decisive phase on Saturday, with two crucial Group B fixtures that could determine the fate of four teams.
At 5:00 p.m. at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, the Central African Republic (CAR) will take on Mauritania in a high-stakes encounter.

Both teams are yet to register a win, and the victor will have a realistic shot at progressing to the knockout stages.
CAR head coach Sébastien Ngato is confident his side can bounce back from their 4-2 defeat to Burkina Faso. “If we don’t win, it’s game over for us. We’ve discussed solutions and must be ready to give our all,” he said. Forward Ghislain Moguedi echoed his coach’s sentiments, stressing the team’s determination to learn from their mistakes and secure maximum points.
Mauritania, with just one point from two matches, also see this game as a final. Head coach Artiz Garay Lopez admitted it is “make-or-break” for his team. “We aim to finish second in the group, with Tanzania as favourites for top spot.
This match is decisive — we must be physically and mentally prepared,” he stated. Midfielder Mohamed Lemine Houboutt added that discipline and focus would be key to securing victory.
Later in the evening, co-hosts Tanzania face Madagascar in another pivotal clash. Tanzania have enjoyed a perfect start, defeating Burkina Faso and Mauritania without conceding a goal.
A win against Madagascar will seal their first-ever qualification for the CHAN knockout rounds.
Tanzania boast an impressive record in second group games, winning all three in previous tournaments 1-0 and keeping clean sheets.
This year, they have already scored three goals from three different players, with Shomari Kapombe netting a late winner against Mauritania.
Madagascar, meanwhile, are chasing their first victory of the tournament after a goalless draw with Mauritania.
The island nation, semi-finalists in 2022, are facing a CHAN host for the first time and have never lost a group game before.
However, their lack of attacking threat in the opener, managing just one shot on target, will be a concern.
The stakes are clear: Tanzania are one step away from history, Madagascar are fighting to stay in contention, and CAR and Mauritania are locked in a survival battle.
The Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is set for a night of drama that could reshape Group B’s standings.
