Zambia will begin their 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign on Thursday afternoon with a challenging Group A encounter against DR Congo at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
The Chipolopolo of Zambia, led by experienced coach Avram Grant, are seeking a bright start as they aim to secure their first-ever CHAN title.

Zambia’s best performance in the tournament remains a third-place finish in the 2009 edition, and Grant is keen to lay a solid foundation for long-term national team success.
“Preparations have gone really well, and we’re looking forward to the first game,” said Grant.
“This is a great opportunity for every player to prove themselves. Our focus is on our structure and playing to our strengths. It’s about building a winning mentality.”
On the other hand, DR Congo face immense pressure following a 1-0 defeat to tournament hosts Kenya in their opener.
The two-time champions must now get a result against Zambia to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.
Head coach Otis Ngoma acknowledged the shortcomings of their opening game and emphasized the need for improvement.
“We missed too many chances against Kenya. Now we must bounce back. We’re not here for excuses — we’re here to compete,” Ngoma stated. “We need to be more clinical in front of goal.”
Despite the early setback, DR Congo striker Jephte Kitambala remains optimistic.
“There is no pressure, just focus. We want to make amends and stay in contention,” he said.
With Zambia’s tactical discipline and freshness up against DR Congo’s desperation and physicality,
Thursday’s match promises to be a thrilling battle of styles and urgency, one that could shape the course of Group A.
