Today, August 5th 2026, the Nigerian sports community celebrates Kola Adeyanju Daniel, a journalist, broadcaster, media strategist and sports administrator whose remarkable career has taken him from the early days of chasing football stories to becoming an influential voice in Nigeria’s sports administration.
His is a story built on passion, persistence, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to sports journalism.

Daniel’s love for journalism began remarkably early. As a young student, he would use money from his mother to buy Sports Souvenir, immersing himself in football stories and learning the language of the game. That early fascination with football writing would eventually become the foundation of a career that has spanned journalism, broadcasting, media management and sports administration.
His professional journalism journey began as a freelance sports writer, where he worked under the guidance of experienced journalists and gradually established himself in the competitive Nigerian sports media space.
From covering domestic football to reporting from some of the biggest sporting events in the world, Daniel continued to build his reputation through hard work and consistency.
His career has given him the opportunity to cover five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, four FIFA World Cups and three Olympic Games, experiences that have exposed him to football and sports at the highest international level.
But his journey has not been restricted to journalism.
At one point, Daniel was a lecturer at the University of Abuja, before making the bold decision to leave academia and pursue his passion for journalism and broadcasting. It was a decision that demanded sacrifice, but ultimately opened the door to a career that would take him into Nigeria’s sports administration.
He later became involved in media organisations and worked with prominent figures in Nigerian sports journalism, while also establishing his own media platform, CKD Media.
In 2019, another major chapter began when he was appointed Special Assistant on Media to then Sports Minister Sunday Dare. The role moved him from simply reporting sports administration to becoming part of the machinery responsible for communicating government sports policies and programmes.
He subsequently continued in the same capacity under Sports Minister John Owan Enoh, further demonstrating the depth of experience and trust he had developed within the sector.
Today, Daniel serves as Special Assistant (Media) to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, where his responsibility extends to communicating the activities, policies and programmes of the Commission to the public.
His understanding of both journalism and sports administration gives him a unique perspective. He understands the demands of the newsroom while also appreciating the complexities involved in running and communicating sports programmes at the highest level.
Beyond his official responsibilities, Daniel has remained connected to the wider sports media community. His contribution was recognised in 2025, when he received an award for Outstanding Support to the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) during the association’s 60th Anniversary Distinguished Service Awards.
Yet, perhaps the most inspiring part of his story is how closely his present position mirrors the dream that started many years ago.
The young man who once spent his mother’s money buying sports newspapers to read about football has grown into a professional helping to tell, shape and communicate Nigeria’s sports story.
From the newsroom to international sporting arenas, from academia to government communications, Daniel’s career reflects an ability to adapt, learn and remain relevant in an ever-changing sports landscape.
His journey is also a reminder that careers are not always built in a straight line. Sometimes, they are shaped by bold decisions, difficult sacrifices and the courage to follow one’s passion.
Today is therefore not just about celebrating another birthday. It is about celebrating a journey.
