This means the fleet-footed youngster takes after former Super Eagles left-wing-back, Ifeanyi Udeze; current national team captain, William Troost-Ekong; and Nigerian-born ex-England youth international, Chuba Akpom, as the next lad from his country to play for PAOK.

A statement posted on social media by CATS FC’s chairman, Alhaji Agboola Dabiri described Ikonong as a ‘standout player’ who is enjoying an accelerated surge in his career, after he was spotted during a recent talent hunt event.

The statement disclosed at length: “Abasiekeme Ikonong, a promising young footballer from Akwa Ibom State, has taken a major step in his football journey!!

“Once a standout player for CATS FC in Lagos State, Abasiekeme was scouted during a talent discovery programme and, in just 15 minutes on the pitch, he made a lasting impression.

“Today, that dream has become reality, as he officially signs his first professional contract with Greek top-flight club, PAOK FC. This is a huge milestone for Abasiekeme, and the beginning of a new chapter in the Greek Super League and European football.”
