Cameroon Set ‘Continuity’ Example For NFF, Confirm Contract Extension For National Team’s Coach

Cameroon have set an example for Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to follow by announcing a contract extension for David Pagou, the coach of their national team, Sports247 gathered.

In contrast with speculation that Pagou would be sacked for failing to take the Indomitable Lions beyond the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, the gaffer will be retained in the name of ‘continuity.’

This could be seen as a pointer for what the NFF should do regarding Eric Sekou Chelle, who overcame critical reactions to his apportionment and led the Super Eagles to third place at the same competition.

The NFF may now have to quickly confirm a new contract for Chelle, after Federation of Cameroon Football (FECAFOOT) president, Samuel Eto’o disclosed that Pagou will stay with the Lions for the foreseeable future.

This comes based on positive reactions that trailed the Lions’ performance at AFCON 2025, where they lost to the host nation in a controversial manner, which left many observers praising Pagou for achieving much within a short time with the team.

Pagou was handed the job just two weeks to AFCON 2025, after Eto’o fell out with the team’s expatriate gaffer, Marc Brys, and the indigenous tactician’s efforts have now been rewarded with a longer tenure in the saddle.

Confirmation about Pagou’s extension was revealed in a post on social media, which further noted that Eto’o is thinking about stability, rebuilding and long-term success for Cameroon’s national team.

The post by @MickyJnr on X noted: “FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o has confirmed that head coach David Pagou will remain in charge of the Cameroon national team.

“Eto’o says the decision is driven by the need for stability and continuity, as the Indomitable Lions focus on rebuilding and long-term success. No sacking. No panic. Just trust in the process.”
