Nigeria enjoyed one of their most impressive campaigns at the tournament, recording five wins from five matches to become the only team with a perfect record before the semi-finals.

That run came to an end against host nation Morocco, as the Super Eagles lost 4–2 on penalties after 120 minutes of goalless football — the only match in which Nigeria failed to score throughout the competition.

Despite the failure to make it to the grand finale, the Super Eagles to remain the tournament’s highest-scoring side, having netted 14 goals so far.

Reacting to the defeat, Bassey took to his social media platform to reflect on the team’s journey and the narrow loss.

“We thank God in all situations. A gutting way to end the tournament. The support and togetherness we’ve felt has been special,” the Fulham defender wrote.

“Sorry we couldn’t take it all the way. We fought and gave it our all. We’ll build on this. Not finished yet though — we still have something to push for.”

Nigeria will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, where they will face Egypt in the bronze medal match on Saturday.
