CAF Confederation Cup: Gamondi Laments Goalkeeper Error as Singida Black Stars Held in Burundi

Bujumbura – Singida Black Stars head coach Miguel Gamondi has voiced his frustration after a costly mistake from goalkeeper Amas Abasogi denied his side a crucial away victory in their CAF Confederation Cup first-leg clash against Flambeau du Centre of Burundi.

The Tanzanian club looked on course for a famous win after Zambian international Clatous Chama put them ahead in the 54th minute, finishing off a fine team move that sliced through the Burundian defence. However, just two minutes later, disaster struck.

Abasogi, under pressure from a Flambeau striker, miscontrolled a routine back pass inside his own box, allowing the hosts to pounce and score the equaliser, much to the frustration of the travelling Tanzanian supporters.

Coach Gamondi was visibly displeased on the touchline but opted to keep faith in his goalkeeper for the remainder of the encounter, which ended 1–1 at full-time.

Speaking after the match, the Argentine tactician admitted the draw felt like a missed opportunity. “We played very well and dominated for long spells, but one mistake cost us. It’s painful because we had the match under control,” said Gamondi.

He, however, defended his goalkeeper, describing the incident as part of the learning process. “Abasogi is a talented young player. These mistakes happen in football, and I believe he will come back stronger in the next leg.”

The return leg will take place next Sunday at the Chamazi Complex in Dar es Salaam, where Singida Black Stars will need an outright victory to progress to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

“We will fix our errors, stay focused, and make sure we finish the job at home,” Gamondi added confidently.
