CAF Chief Stands Firm ‘I Will Defend Their Independence’ — Motsepe Backs Judicial Bodies Despite Controversy

President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has taken a firm stance amid growing controversy in African football, declaring that he will defend the independence and integrity of CAF’s judicial bodies, regardless of personal opinion.

Speaking during CAF’s executive meeting in Cairo, Motsepe addressed concerns surrounding recent disciplinary and appeal decisions that have sparked debate across the continent.

In a measured but resolute tone, the CAF president emphasized that both the Disciplinary Board and the Appeal Board must be respected as independent institutions tasked with upholding the rules of the game.

“As a football fan, I may not always agree,” he admitted, acknowledging that some decisions may be contentious. However, he stressed that personal views must not interfere with the principles of governance and due process.

For Motsepe, the issue goes beyond individual rulings, it is about protecting the credibility of African football’s legal framework.

“I have a duty to defend them,” he insisted, making it clear that his role requires him to safeguard the autonomy of these bodies, even when their decisions are unpopular.

The statement comes at a time when CAF has been under intense scrutiny, particularly following controversial rulings linked to major competitions. Critics have questioned consistency and transparency, while others have called for reforms.

Motsepe’s response, however, signals a commitment to institutional independence rather than direct  interference.

Observers see his comments as an attempt to reinforce confidence in CAF’s governance structure, ensuring that decisions are made based on established rules rather than external pressure or public sentiment.

At the same time, his acknowledgment that he may personally disagree with certain outcomes adds a human dimension to the role, balancing leadership with neutrality.

As African football continues to grow in profile and competitiveness, maintaining trust in its governing systems will be crucial.

And for Motsepe, that trust begins with one principle, independence must be protected, no matter the circumstances.
