Speaking ahead of the crucial encounter, Finidi acknowledged his team’s modest return so far but stressed that the focus is firmly on winning, especially with the match taking place at home.
“This is our fourth game and we are playing at home,” Finidi said. “We played this same team last week, so it’s still fresh in our memories.
We don’t need to say too much to the players. We just need to go out there, put in the hard work and make sure we get the maximum three points.”
The former Super Eagles winger admitted that while goals are important, results matter most at this stage of the competition.
“At this point in time, it’s all about winning. If we can score more goals, I will sign it straight away,” he noted. “We’ve been defending well, and when you defend well, you win games. If it means scoring one goal and defending properly to protect it, we will do that.”
Finidi also highlighted the collective nature of football, pointing out that different players can rise to the occasion on different days.
“Football is a team sport. One day it could be a midfielder that saves the day. The last match was the goalkeeper’s turn and he did very well; we must commend him,” he said.
“Every game is different, with different results and a different man of the match. I actually hope tomorrow our goalkeeper will not be the man of the match. We need other players to step up.”
While cautious about predicting the outcome, the Rivers United coach was clear about his team’s mindset.
“I don’t know what the outcome will be tomorrow, but I can tell you we will give our all. We want to win and do everything necessary to get the three points,” Finidi concluded.
Rivers United will be hoping that home advantage and renewed belief can translate into a vital victory as they continue their push for progress in the CAF Champions League.
