CAF Champions League: Rivers United Dispatch Black Bulls to Qualify for Group Stage — First Nigerian Club to Reach the Stage in Seven Years

Rivers United have etched their name in history after securing a hard-fought 3–1 victory over Black Bulls of Mozambique to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League — becoming the first Nigerian club to reach this stage since Lobi Stars in the 2018/19 season.

The Pride of Rivers began the decisive second-leg clash in Port Harcourt with intent and intensity, taking the lead in the 15th minute through Wasiu Falolu’s well-taken effort.

The early goal lifted the atmosphere at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium as the hosts chased redemption following a 1–0 defeat in the first leg.

Rivers United continued to pile pressure, and their persistence paid off in the 42nd minute when Maclyn Biokpo converted from the penalty spot to make it 2–0, putting the aggregate score at 2–1 in favour of the Nigerians.

However, Black Bulls refused to bow easily as Moctar Diallo pulled one back for the visitors just two minutes into the second half, levelling the aggregate at 2–2 and setting up a tense finish.

But Finidi George’s men showed great composure and determination.

In the 76th minute, Timothy Zachariah produced a moment of brilliance, firing home a stunning strike to seal a 3–1 victory on the night and 3–2 on aggregate.

With this result, Rivers United advance to the CAF Champions League group phase — a feat which guarantees them six more matches in the continent elite competition and a chance to become the second Nigerian club to win the trophy after Enyimba feat of 2003 and 2004.
