In a feature published on CAFOnline, the continental body highlighted how Nigeria’s winning culture has evolved yet endured through different eras.

As preparations intensify for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, CAF underscored the Super Falcons’ rich history and sustained dominance.

Nigeria remains the most successful nation in African women’s football and one of only seven teams to appear at every FIFA Women’s World Cup.

CAF noted that the Falcons are targeting an unprecedented 11th continental title at WAFCON 2026, which also serves as Africa’s qualification route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The feature traced Nigeria’s journey from its early pioneers to modern stars, emphasizing leadership, sacrifice, and resilience as defining values.

Three figures were profiled as symbols of that legacy: Florence Omagbemi, Perpetua Nkwocha, and Rasheedat Ajibade.

Florence Omagbemi: The Trailblazing Pioneer

Former captain and coach Florence Omagbemi was praised for laying the foundation of the Super Falcons’ culture.

Omagbemi captained Nigeria between 1991 and 2004 before later guiding the team to continental glory as head coach in 2016.

She remains the only individual to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations both as a player-captain and as a coach.

Speaking to CAFOnline, Omagbemi recalled an era defined by sacrifice, when women played football despite social resistance and limited support.

She stressed that discipline, leadership, and national pride mattered more than financial reward during her playing days.

CAF described her leadership as instrumental in shaping the Falcons’ mentality of authority, humility, and accountability.

Perpetua Nkwocha: The Ruthless Standard-Setter

Legendary forward Perpetua Nkwocha was celebrated as one of Africa’s most prolific goal scorers.

Nkwocha finished as top scorer at four WAFCON tournaments, a record that underlined Nigeria’s dominance between 1999 and 2015.

CAF highlighted her consistency, composure, and ability to deliver in decisive moments for the national team.

The four-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year said her success was driven by discipline, focus, and love for the game.

She added that her role went beyond scoring goals, as she sought to inspire teammates and reinforce professionalism.

According to CAF, Nkwocha helped embed confidence and resilience into the Super Falcons’ identity.

Rasheedat Ajibade: The Modern Torchbearer

Current star Rasheedat Ajibade was identified as the face of the modern Super Falcons generation.

Ajibade, known for her versatility and work rate, represents a tactically flexible and team-oriented era.

The CAF Women’s Player of the Tournament at WAFCON 2024 emphasized collective responsibility over individual brilliance.

She described her leadership style as service-driven, focused on leading by example and supporting teammates.

CAF also noted her role in integrating younger and foreign-born players into the squad.

Ajibade highlighted the rising intensity and competitiveness of WAFCON, especially following the dramatic 2024 final against hosts Morocco.

Morocco 2026: Defending a Heritage

CAF concluded that WAFCON 2026 carries significance beyond silverware for Nigeria.

With World Cup qualification at stake, the Super Falcons will compete not only to win but also to protect a storied legacy.

From Omagbemi’s pioneering courage to Nkwocha’s ruthless excellence and Ajibade’s modern leadership, CAF said Nigeria’s winning spirit remains intact.

As Morocco 2026 approaches, the continental body believes the baton has been securely passed to capable hands.
