Adamu’s appointment follows the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down on Saturday day to pursue personal projects and is reportedly set to contest for the presidency of the Congolese Football Federation.

Historic Appointment

Adamu’s elevation marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the role in CAF’s 70-year history.

Prior to his appointment, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events (Director of Competitions), a position he held since 2018. During his tenure, he oversaw the organisation and delivery of nearly 30 continental competitions.

His nomination was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently ratified by the CAF Congress during a meeting held in Cairo, Egypt.

In his new role, Adamu will take charge of CAF’s administrative operations and oversee key upcoming football activities, including preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and the African School Football Championship.

Adamu is an alumnus of the prestigious FIFA Master programme and holds a degree in Business Management and Computer Science from the American University of Paris. Before joining CAF, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the Copa Lagos Futsal tournament.

He is also the son of Amos Adamu, a veteran Nigerian sports administrator and former member of both FIFA and CAF Executive Committees.

CAF is expected to announce further developments regarding the substantive appointment of a permanent Secretary General in due course.
