Rising Nigerian sprint star, Success Oyibu, has shared her delight and gratitude after clinching a silver medal in the U-18 girls’ 100m final at the ongoing 3rd Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U-18/U-20 Championship in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The 17-year-old produced a solid performance on Thursday night, racing to a time of 11.77 seconds to finish second behind fellow Nigerian Chioma Cynthia Nweke, who claimed gold. Côte D’Ivoire’s Chantel Lou Yoman took bronze to complete the podium.

Success Oyibu, who was visibly emotional but upbeat after the race, said she was proud of her achievement and thankful for the platform provided by the organisers.

“I’m happy because it’s an opportunity to get to this level, to be on the international stage,” she said. “I’m grateful to God, to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), to CAA, and World Athletics for recognising this tournament. It’s a great opportunity for young athletes like me.”

Though she had earlier expressed hopes of winning gold in the sprint event, Oyibu remained positive and appreciative of her silver medal finish.

“I feel very happy. I wasn’t expecting it. I just wanted to do my best and I actually came in second, so I’m happy,” she said. “Nothing went wrong. I really surprised myself—it’s just that I met someone greater and stronger on the day. But I’m proud of my performance.”

Looking ahead, the talented sprinter expressed optimism and determination to keep improving, adding that her journey was only just beginning.

“This is not the end. There’s always a next time. God gave me silver today, but I know greater heights are ahead.”

Oyibu also praised the AFN’s partnership with Puma, commending the comfort and quality of the national team’s kit.

“It’s very easy to move in. It makes you feel light, like there’s nothing on your body. It’s an immense blessing.”

One of the highlights of her experience, she noted, was meeting other young athletes from across the continent who share her passion for the sport.

“The energy is amazing. It boosts your spirit to do well. I’m looking forward to seeing them again—they push you to achieve personal bests.”

She rounded off by giving heartfelt thanks to her coach for his tireless support and guidance.

“I thank him very much—he has been there for me through everything: through prayers, training, motivation, and inspiration. Thank you, sir, for bringing me this far.”

The CAA U-18/U-20 Championship continues in Abeokuta with Nigeria leading the medal table and young stars like Oyibu adding to the nation’s growing sprint legacy.
