Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has described his team’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe as their most important fixture in over two decades, stressing that it could define South Africa’s football future.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated Southern African derby, Broos admitted that Zimbabwe remain one of the most unpredictable teams in the region, but insisted that his players are ready for the battle.

“This is the most important game for South Africa in the last twenty years,” Broos declared. “We cannot afford to take it lightly. Zimbabwe are always motivated against us, but we’re prepared and focused. We want to qualify on merit, not by depending on other teams.”
The Belgian tactician acknowledged the pressure surrounding the match, especially with FIFA’s recent points deduction against South Africa shaking up the qualification table. Despite that setback, Broos said his side is determined to fight back and reclaim control of their destiny.
“The decision was disappointing, but it’s in the past now,” he said. “What matters is how we respond on the pitch. The players know what’s at stake — it’s time to prove ourselves again.”
Broos also expressed confidence in his squad’s maturity, noting the development of several key players who now feature prominently in Europe and top African leagues.
“We’ve come a long way since I took over,” he added. “The mentality has changed. We have a more balanced squad with players who understand responsibility. That gives me hope.”
The match against Zimbabwe will take place in Johannesburg, where South Africa will be looking to grab maximum points and keep their 2026 World Cup qualification dream alive.
