Premier League outfit Brentford is on the brink of finalizing the acquisition of Nigeria’s promising youth star, Benjamin Fredrick, hailing from Kaduna-based Simoiben FC.

The highly-touted defender is set to join the Bees on a one-year loan deal, accompanied by an enticing option to purchase.

Fredrick’s exceptional performance played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s remarkable journey to the quarter-finals of the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

During the competition, the Flying Eagles achieved stunning victories over eventual finalists Italy and host nation Argentina, keeping a commendable two clean sheets.

At just 18 years old, Fredrick formed a formidable partnership alongside Abel Ogwuche in the heart of the Nigerian defense. This partnership proved instrumental in the team’s advancement, as the duo started all but one of Nigeria’s five matches.

Even in the sole outlier match, where Nigeria’s qualification from the Group Stage was already secured, Fredrick was rested to avoid suspension in the subsequent stages.

The young defender’s performances garnered widespread acclaim and rapidly positioned him as one of the standout prospects for central defense globally.

Brentford’s successful pursuit of Fredrick is a testament to their strategic vision, prevailing over competition from Liverpool, Midtjylland, and Celtic.

The West London club’s offer, which outlines a clearer path for the player’s career progression, was pivotal in sealing the deal.

Notably, this marks Brentford’s second successful acquisition from the pool of breakout stars at the 2023 Under-20 World Cup.

In June, the club secured the services of South Korean youth international defender Ji-Soo Kim from K League Two side Seongnam.

Fredrick’s imminent transition to Brentford was set in motion as he arrived in the United Kingdom on Sunday, followed by a medical assessment on Monday.

His visit also included an introduction to Nigeria international Frank Onyeka, who is a part of the Brentford roster.

Pending the issuance of a UK work visa and fulfillment of other regulatory procedures, the 18-year-old talent is poised to officially sign with the London-based club.

Notably, Simoiben FC will not receive a fee for the loan, accentuating Brentford’s intent to nurture and develop promising talents like Benjamin Fredrick.
