History was made in Cairo as Nigeria’s men’s flag football team defeated hosts Egypt 13–12 in a thrilling final to become the 2025 IFAF Africa Flag Football Champions, just hours after the women’s team claimed their own title.
With passion, precision, and nerves of steel, the Nigerian squad weathered immense pressure and a partisan crowd to pull off one of the most memorable wins in African flag football.
The final whistle confirmed a continental double for Nigeria, cementing the nation’s status as the new powerhouse of the sport.
This momentous victory is more than a game—it is a milestone in Nigeria’s sports history. Central to this triumph is the Showtime Flag Football League, which has nurtured the majority of players and coaches who formed the backbone of both the men’s and women’s squads.
Showtime’s emphasis on professionalism, structure, and grassroots development has elevated the level of play in Nigeria to international standards.
Speaking after the win, Azeez Amida, Chairman of Showtime Flag Football League, reflected on the journey:
“What a moment for Nigeria. To see both our male and female teams rise as champions of Africa is deeply emotional. It proves that our years of investment in talent and structure are bearing fruit.”
Amida also expressed deep gratitude to the leadership of the National Sports Commission, saying:
“I want to especially thank Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC, and Director General Bukola Olopade, for their unwavering support and belief in flag football. Their presence, guidance, and partnership have been instrumental in helping the sport reach this level.”
This victory, alongside the women’s championship win earlier in the day, underscores the importance of building a national flag football federation—a cause Amida continues to champion. With Nigeria leading the continent in performance and structure, the call for a unified national body has never been louder.
Tonight, Nigeria didn’t just win two titles—they announced their dominance and lit the path forward for African flag football.
