In a historic breakthrough for one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing sports, the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAWF) has received official approval from the National Sports Commission to demonstrate Armwrestling at the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged “Gateway Games Ogun 2024”, scheduled to take place from May 16 to 30 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The news was confirmed by Mrs. Thecla Opara, Director of the National Sports Festival and Para Sports (NSFPS) and Secretary of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC), who announced that arm wrestling has been graciously granted a demonstration slot during the highly anticipated event.
A Triumph of Leadership and Vision
This milestone achievement is a reflection of the unwavering leadership of Engr. Samuel Olatunji Jackson, President of the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation. Under his guidance, arm wrestling has risen from relative obscurity to become Nigeria’s third most popular sport in 2024, following its medal-winning performance at the African Games in Ghana.
Engr. Jackson, elated by the approval, expressed deep gratitude:
“We are truly honored and grateful to the National Sports Commission, especially the Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade for recognizing the power and potential of armwrestling. This is a huge step forward for the sport in Nigeria.”
He also extended appreciation to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC):
“The NOC has been a consistent pillar of support in our journey. Their encouragement has fueled our growth, and we’re excited to showcase what Nigerian arm wrestling is all about at this prestigious festival.”
A New Chapter for Armwrestling
This demonstration marks the first time arm wrestling will be featured on a national multi-sport stage, signaling a new chapter for the sport’s development and visibility in Nigeria. It will also offer thousands of spectators and athletes a firsthand experience of the strength, skill, and excitement that arm wrestling brings.
With the Gateway Games now set to host this groundbreaking demonstration, all eyes will be on Abeokuta this May as Nigeria Armwrestling prepares to grip the nation’s attention like never before.
History has been made—and this is only the beginning.
