Breaking: Khadijat Idris, Mercy Genesis Win Gold for Nigeria in Casablanca Finals

Team Nigeria has hit the ground running in the finals of Day Two at the 2025 African Wrestling Championships, as Mercy Genesis (50kg) and Khadijat Idris (55kg) have both captured gold medals, pushing Nigeria’s gold tally to six at the tournament.

Mercy Genesis opened the evening with a dominant display, overpowering Tunisia’s Cheima Chebila 10–0 via technical superiority. Moments later, Khadijat Idris followed suit in impressive fashion, defeating Achouak Tekouk of Algeria by a commanding 12–1 scoreline in the 55kg women’s final.

“This gold means everything to me — it’s a reward for all the hard work,” said Genesis.
“I fought with Nigeria in my heart,” Idris added. “The cheers, the spirit, it all pushed me to give more.”

Both wrestlers showed exceptional control, technique, and determination, setting the tone for the rest of the Nigerian squad.

With five more finalists still to compete tonight — including three more women and two men — Nigeria is on the path to another potential clean sweep.
