Nigeria’s world-record holder Tobi Amusan has captured her country’s first medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships after a thrilling women’s 100 metres hurdles final in Tokyo, where Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji stunned the field to snatch gold.
Kambundji produced the race of her life, clocking a blistering 12.24 seconds — a new Swiss national record — to edge out Amusan, who finished just behind in 12.29 seconds for silver.

The performance denied the defending champion a second consecutive world title, but ensured Nigeria celebrated its first podium finish of these championships.
Amusan, who set the world record of 12.12 in 2022 and has been the dominant force in the hurdles over the past three years, fought hard in the closing stages but could not reel in Kambundji, who powered to the line with flawless form.
The bronze medal went to the United States’ Grace Stark in 12.34 seconds, followed by compatriot Masai Russell in fourth with 12.44. Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland and Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas both clocked 12.49 season’s bests to share fifth, while Jamaica’s Danielle Williams finished seventh in 12.53 and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands placed eighth in 12.56.
For Amusan, the silver medal is both a moment of pride and reflection — she remains firmly among the world’s elite and continues to write history for Nigeria, whose national anthem may yet be heard before the championships conclude
