Boxing Grand Prix Sensation Yusuf Adeniji Wins WBA Africa Super Welterweight Title After Apiah DQ

Nigeria’s Yusuf Adeniji (17-1, 10 KOs) has been crowned WBA Africa super welterweight champion after defeating Ghana’s Akimos Anaang Apiah (7-3, 6 KOs) by disqualification in the fifth round of their title bout on October 1 in Nigeria.

Adeniji controlled the fight from the outset, using a sharp jab and clever footwork to nullify Apiah’s aggressive approach.

While the Ghanaian pressed forward in search of heavy exchanges, it was Adeniji who landed the cleaner punches, particularly at mid-range.

The contest turned controversial in the fourth round when Apiah was warned for low blows.

Moments later in the fifth, he landed a blatant shot below the belt that left Adeniji in visible pain.

After consultation with the ringside doctor and review of the incident, the referee stopped the fight and declared Adeniji the winner by technical decision.

The scorecards at the time read 50-46, 50-45, 50-45, all in favor of the Nigerian.

The victory secured Adeniji’s 17th professional win and his first major continental title under the World Boxing Association banner.

Despite the abrupt ending, his early dominance and composure in the ring underscored his growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest boxing prospects.

This new feat is a follow up to Yusuf fantastic run in 2024 WBA Boxing Grand Prix where he finished as the last Nigerian standing with impressive showing.

Yusuf saw made it into the quarter finals of the prestigious competition but he was by unanimous decision (55–59, 56–58, 56–58) to France’s Yoni Valverde Jr after six rounds of action in the men’s featherweight quarter-finals at the third phase.
