Villarreal have long been interested in the Nigerian international, as Unai Emery is looking to bolster his attacking options. However, the Yellow Submarine have a new competition in Borussia Dortmund, who are scouting for suitable successors for Sébastien Haller.

Haller, who joined Dortmund from Ajax last month has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. The Ivorian will be out for several months and Dortmund is looking into signing a replacement.

Sadiq has emerged as a transfer target for the The Black and Yellows. With just over a week until the start of the new La Liga season, Villarreal remain favorites to recruit the 25-year-old, according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“There’s no €25m bid for Umar Sadiq from Borussia Dortmund, despite last rumours. Villarreal are the favourites in the race to sign Sadiq as priority. Negotiations will continue but BVB have not opened official talks, as of now,” Romano tweeted.

Sadiq scored 18 goals and provided 9 assists in the Segunda Division last season to help Almeria gain promotion to the Spanish top division after a six year absence. He has three years left on his contract with the Rojiblancos he signed in 2020.
