Boots for Grassroots Project (BFG) Africa has named Nigerian football legend Kanu Nwankwo as its ambassador and unveiled the Celebrity 5-A-Side Series, a sport-driven fundraising initiative aimed at supporting grassroots sports development across the continent.

The newly launched series introduces a high-energy platform built on influence, participation and community impact.
According to the organisers, the initiative will be activated across Local Government Areas, Kingdoms and Senatorial Districts, with respected leaders serving as Chief Hosts for each event.
From public office holders and traditional rulers to business executives and philanthropic leaders, the Chief Hosts are expected to mobilise sponsors, partners, media and local communities in support of BFG’s grassroots development mission.
A major highlight of the programme is the Celebrity 5-A-Side Football Cup, which will feature Kanu Nwankwo alongside other former football stars competing against selected youth teams from host communities.
The matches are designed to celebrate local talent, inspire young athletes and create opportunities through sport.
Each event will also include the presentation of Special Merit Awards to individuals and organisations recognised for outstanding contributions to youth empowerment and community development.
Speaking on his appointment as BFG ambassador, Kanu expressed his commitment to the initiative.
“It is an honour to be associated with an initiative dedicated to supporting underprivileged children across Africa through sport,” he said. “I am aligned with the vision of the project and committed to lending my profile, experience and network to advance its awareness, outreach and fundraising objectives.”
Boots for Grassroots Project Africa has set an ambitious long-term goal of raising one million pairs of sports boots over the next decade.
The boots will be distributed to community sports structures across Africa to empower young athletes and help unlock potential at the grassroots level.
With the launch of the Celebrity 5-A-Side Series, BFG Africa says it is reinforcing its belief that sport can be a powerful tool for social change.
