Blankson Calls for United Front to Boost Nigerian Clubs in Intercontinental Competitions

Rivers Angels head coach Tosan Blankson has called for a more strategic and unified approach to help Nigerian women’s clubs perform better in intercontinental competitions.

Speaking on the challenges faced by Nigerian teams on the global stage, Blankson proposed a model that allows the best players across the league to be pooled together after the NWFL Super Six, in order to strengthen the club representing the country.

“Maybe after the Super Six, the way the winner emerges, the body will now call the best,” Blankson said.

“There should be a selection at that moment then. All the good players should be packed together to form one team that will represent the country.”

The Rivers Angels coach stressed that collective support from all stakeholders is essential, regardless of which club earns qualification.

“If it is Bayelsa that qualifies, everybody should work together for Bayelsa. If it is Edo, everybody should work together for Edo. If it is Rivers or Nasarawa, everyone should support them,” he added.

Blankson believes that a united approach would significantly improve Nigeria’s competitiveness at continental and intercontinental levels, rather than leaving a single club to shoulder the responsibility alone.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions about how best to bridge the gap between Nigerian women’s clubs and their counterparts in Africa and beyond, with calls growing for structural reforms and stronger collaboration within the domestic league.
