Big Leadership Void! Amoo Warns Super Eagles Will Feel Troost-Ekong’s Absence at AFCON

Former Flying Eagles head coach Fatai Amoo has warned that the Super Eagles will miss the leadership and experience of William Troost-Ekong at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, describing the defender’s absence as a significant setback for the team.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Amoo said Troost-Ekong’s influence goes beyond what is seen on the pitch, stressing that his presence has been vital in recent campaigns.

“Ekong is not just a defender; he is a leader. His absence will be felt in the dressing room and on the field,” Amoo said.

The former coach noted that Troost-Ekong played a major role during Nigeria’s recent AFCON runs, particularly in organizing the back line and guiding younger players through pressure moments.

“He understands big tournaments. He talks, he organizes, and he keeps players focused. That kind of experience is difficult to replace,” he added.

Amoo also expressed concern about injuries affecting other key defenders, warning that the situation could weaken Nigeria’s defensive stability heading into the competition.

“When you combine Ekong’s absence with injuries to other defenders, it becomes another blow for the team,” he noted.

He explained that AFCON tournaments often punish teams that lack defensive cohesion, making leadership at the back even more important.

“At AFCON, one defensive mistake can end your tournament. Leadership in defense is crucial,” Amoo said.

Despite his concerns, the former Flying Eagles coach urged the remaining defenders to rise to the challenge and take responsibility.

“Someone must step up. This is the time for other defenders to show leadership and maturity,” he stressed.

Amoo also called on the coaching crew to ensure defensive organization and communication are prioritized in training.

“The coaches must work hard on structure and coordination at the back. That will be key,” he added.

He concluded by expressing hope that the Super Eagles can overcome the setback through unity and discipline.

“It won’t be easy without Ekong, but if the team stays united and focused, they can still compete strongly,” Amoo said.
