Former Super Eagles striker Benedict Akwuegbu has praised Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Benin Republic, describing it as a statement performance that proves the team has rediscovered its rhythm and hunger.
Akwuegbu — who starred for the Super Eagles in the early 2000s and enjoyed a successful club career in Austria with Grazer AK — said the result shows that Nigeria remains a powerhouse on the continent when the players play with unity and purpose.

“I was impressed with the team’s attitude and fighting spirit,” Akwuegbu said. “The boys showed what it means to play for Nigeria. If they continue with this same mentality, I have no doubt that we’ll qualify for the World Cup. This is the kind of performance that brings confidence back to the camp and belief to the fans.”
Akwuegbu applauded head coach Eric Chelle for restoring discipline and structure to the team, adding that every player appeared committed to the tactical plan. He, however, cautioned that the job is not yet done, warning that the playoffs will require even greater focus and consistency.
“The playoffs are never easy. Every country wants that World Cup ticket, but Nigeria must show they are mentally tougher,” he stated. “The team should not relax after this win. They need to stay grounded and prepare well for the next stage.”
The former forward also called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) led by Ibrahim Gusau to maintain strong support for the players and technical crew. “The NFF should provide everything the team needs to succeed — logistics, motivation, and organization. The boys have done their part on the pitch; now the federation must do theirs,” he said.
Akwuegbu concluded by saying that the Super Eagles’ win has rekindled national hope, stressing that qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now within reach.
