The Nigeria Premier Football League blossoms back into life this weekend with Bendel Insurance and 3SC headlining the Matchday two weekend with trademark passion, drama and rivalries.
At 4 pm on Saturday, the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium turf in Benin City will host it’s first match this season as Bendel Insurance welcome Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) for a clash steeped in history, nostalgia and fierce tradition.

Both sides arrive with wounded pride, both seeking redemption after disappointing opening-day defeats.
Insurance, humbled 0-2 away at El-Kanemi Warriors, sit bottom of the table, while 3SC suffered a stinging 0-1 loss at home to Bayelsa United, leaving the two old adversaries rooted in 19th and 20th place.
That bleak beginning lends today’s duel even more weight, goals, points, and pride are desperately needed to lift spirits and begin the slow climb upwards.
Yet, this is no ordinary fixture. The rivalry between Insurance and 3SC runs deep, an age-old battle woven into the fabric of Nigerian football.
Last season, when the two met at this very ground, it was Michael Enaruna’s late strike that secured a narrow 1-0 win for Insurance, a result that left Shooting Stars’ fans crestfallen.
Enaruna has since departed, but the echoes of that night linger, reminding both sides that fine margins define this rivalry.
The spotlight also shines brightly on the dugouts as both teams step forward under new head coaches.Insurance guided by Greg Ikhenoba, and 3SC by Nurudeen Aweroro.
Fresh ideas, fresh promises, and a restless demand from club managements who have invested heavily: the stakes could not be higher.
Benin fans expect Insurance to rediscover their bite at home, while the Ibadan faithful, many of whom will make the short but spirited trip down the expressway, yearn for 3SC to break their long-standing jinx in Benin.
History, however, has not been kind to the Oluyole Warriors at this venue. Since the turn of the millennium, 3SC have managed just one draw in five visits (D1 L4). Their last meaningful point here dates back as far as 1999.
For Coach Aweroro, restoring belief and resilience in his players is not just tactical, it is deeply psychological.
Insurance too have their own burdens. They have not yet found the net this season, and with the home crowd demanding goals and points, Ikhenoba’s men must translate possession into precision.
Both coaches, speaking ahead of the tie, promised renewed hunger and assured their fans that the shadows of Matchday 1 will not define them.
And so, as the drums roll in Benin for the first home.match this season anticipation swells.
Will Insurance extend their dominance over their Ibadan rivals at home? Or will 3SC finally break the curse of Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and carve a fresh beginning under Aweroro?
One thing is certain: this fixture, laced with history and coloured by passion, will light up Matchday 2 of the NPFL.
