Believe in Yourself, Don’t Give Up – Governor Sanwo-Olu Empowers Super Eagles Ahead of AFCON Kick-off

In a heartfelt address, Lagos State Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu has rallied behind the Super Eagles, urging them to give their all and bring glory to Nigeria in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

As the 34th edition of the continental championship kicks off in Cote d’Ivoire this weekend, the Governor’s words come as a timely motivation for the national team.

Despite being touted as strong contenders for the title, the Super Eagles have faced setbacks in the form of injuries to key players.

Taiwo Awoniyi’s absence, Kelechi Iheanacho’s race against time to recover, and Victor Boniface’s withdrawal have tested the resolve of head coach Jose Peseiro, leaving him with only two fit strikers in Victor Osimhen and Umar Sadiq.

Undeterred by the challenges, Nigerians remain optimistic about their team’s chances, having clinched the AFCON title three times in 1980, 1994, and 2013.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, addressing the squad at a dinner following their return from a training camp in Abu Dhabi, emphasized the importance of unity and teamwork.

“You are the country unifier; there is excitement in the hearts of over 200 million Nigerians. Believe in yourself, and don’t give up in Côte d’Ivoire,” Governor Sanwo-Olu urged, emphasizing the collective strength needed for success.

He pledged unwavering support, assuring the Super Eagles of the backing of 200 million Nigerians who would take immense pride and joy in their triumph at AFCON.

Acknowledging the significance of the tournament, Governor Sanwo-Olu committed to personally attending the games in Abidjan, underlining the shared aspiration for victory.

He encouraged the team to view the competition as an opportunity to bring joy to the nation and labeled winning the AFCON as the “best palliative” for the country.

After an intensive week-long training in the United Arab Emirates under Coach Peseiro, the Super Eagles are set to depart for Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, on Wednesday, carrying with them the hopes and aspirations of a nation eager for success on the continental stage.
