Bayelsa Receives Torch of Unity, Deputy Governor Urges Ogun to Be Gracious Host Ahead of National Sports Festival

The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has called on the Ogun State Government to ensure it plays the role of a good host as it prepares to welcome athletes and officials for the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2025, scheduled to hold from May 16 to 30 in Abeokuta.

Speaking during the symbolic reception of the Torch of Unity at Peace Park, opposite the Bayelsa State Government House in Yenagoa, Senator Ewhrudjakpo emphasized the importance of national unity and the spirit of sportsmanship the torch represents.

He further expressed optimism about Team Bayelsa’s prospects, noting their victory in the maiden NDDC Sports Festival held recently in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

“With the momentum from our recent triumph in Uyo, we are confident that Bayelsa will once again finish on the podium at the Gateway Games,” he said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Chief Baraladei Daniel Igali, welcomed the delegation and noted that the Torch’s arrival signals that the festival is imminent. He praised the consistent performance of Team Bayelsa, describing the state as “the new epicenter of sporting glory in Nigeria.”

Reinforcing the state’s readiness, the Bayelsa State Director of Sports, Sir Braveman Wodi, declared that the athletes are fully prepared to compete and shine at the national stage.

Representing the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mrs. Ikana Mbora stated that the arrival of the Torch of Unity officially marks Bayelsa’s invitation to participate in the national sporting fiesta. She was accompanied by other NSC officials including Ubong Sylvester and South-South Zonal Coordinator Njoku Peter.

The highlight of the ceremony was the official reception of the Torch of Unity by Senator Ewhrudjakpo on behalf of Governor Douye Diri.
