Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has made a heartfelt revelation about his early struggles in football, admitting that he almost quit the sport entirely at the age of 15. The Fulham star described that period as a “make-or-break year,” one in which his dream was hanging by a thread.

Bassey, now one of Nigeria’s most trusted defenders, explained that at 15, he had reached a point where failing to find a club would have forced him to abandon football altogether.
“At 15, I almost stopped playing. It was a make-or-break year for me. If I didn’t get a club, that would’ve been it,” he confessed.
The Nigerian international said the journey was filled with uncertainty, rejection, and emotional challenges — experiences many young players go through but rarely speak about publicly.
“It was tough. So many things were not working out. I didn’t see a clear path forward,” he added.
Looking back, Bassey says he can only thank God for the breakthrough that changed everything and set him on the path to professional football.
“Honestly, it’s a blessing to be where I am now. God really helped me. I’m grateful for how far I’ve come,” he said.
Bassey noted that the struggles he endured as a teenager have shaped his mentality, driving him to work harder and appreciate every moment on the pitch.
“Those experiences made me mentally strong. They shaped me. Now I don’t take anything for granted,” he explained.
The defender believes his story should inspire young Nigerian players who may be facing similar crossroads. He urged them to stay patient, keep working, and trust that their breakthrough will come with faith and perseverance.
“Never give up. Your moment can come when you least expect it. Just keep believing and working,” he advised.
As he looks ahead to the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, Bassey says he carries the hunger of someone who almost lost the dream but fought to reclaim it.
“I’m grateful to be here, and I’ll always give my all for Nigeria,” he concluded.
