Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has made a bold comparison between global superstar Erling Haaland and Nigeria’s own Victor Osimhen, declaring that the Napoli striker is the tougher of the two to defend against, even if he admits to being “a little biased.”
Speaking with refreshing honesty, Bassey said both forwards possess frightening qualities that keep defenders on high alert for the full 90 minutes.
“They are both strong, fast and dangerous every second. You can’t switch off, not even once,” he said.

Bassey, who has faced Haaland in European competition and trains regularly with Osimhen in national team camps, explained that each striker brings a unique kind of chaos that defenders must be ready for.
“Haaland is physically unbelievable and his movement is sharp. But Osimhen’s intensity, speed and aggression, it’s different. He keeps coming at you again and again,” Bassey noted.
The Fulham defender said Osimhen’s relentlessness makes him extremely uncomfortable to play against.
“Osimhen never stops. He presses, he chases, he fights for every ball. For me, that makes him the tougher one to defend,” he stated.
Bassey emphasised that defenders must be “perfectly positioned” and “fully switched on” when marking either striker, because giving them even half a yard is enough for them to punish any mistake.
“You must stay alert. One wrong step and they make you pay,” he said.
He also praised Osimhen’s mentality, calling it one of the strongest he has seen in football.
“He always believes he can score. That belief is dangerous for defenders,” he added.
Bassey’s comments come at a time when Osimhen has been widely criticised following Nigeria’s World Cup failure, but the defender insists the country does not appreciate just how exceptional the striker truly is.
“People don’t realise how special he is. Facing Osimhen is a nightmare, the good kind for Nigeria, the bad kind for defenders,” he joked.
Bassey ended by admitting he may be slightly biased in favour of his teammate, but maintains his assessment stands.
His final verdict:
“I’ve faced both. Haaland is world-class, but Osimhen is just different.”
