Basketball Coaching Clinic Empowers Coaches in Southwest Nigeria

A total of 40 basketball coaches from various southwestern states of Nigeria recently participated in a one-day teach-the-trainer coaching clinic held at the Officers Mess Gymnasium inside the Air Force Base in Ikeja, Lagos.

This valuable initiative, organized by the M2 Basketball Academy, aimed to empower basketball coaches by providing them with advanced training and knowledge to enhance their coaching abilities.

Coach Marvin Menzies, the head men’s coach at the University of Missouri–Kansas City and a key figure in this coaching clinic, expressed his commitment to giving back to the sport of basketball by training the trainers. With over 41 years of coaching experience, Coach Menzies believes that imparting knowledge to coaches in Nigeria will have a cascading effect on improving the skills of numerous players under their guidance.

He emphasized that Nigeria is rich in basketball talent, and harnessing this potential requires well-equipped coaches. The coaching clinic not only imparts knowledge but also facilitates the exchange of ideas and experiences between seasoned coaches like Coach Menzies and the coaches in attendance.

The clinic is part of the M2 Basketball Academy’s ongoing efforts to build the capacity of coaches in Nigeria, equipping them with the right tools and techniques to enhance their coaching skills.

Coach Samson Sotuminu, the Executive Director of M2 and Assistant Coach of D’Tigress, expressed his satisfaction with the turnout of coaches at the clinic. Despite challenging weather conditions, the coaches’ dedication to improving their coaching abilities was evident.

NBA ambassador in Nigeria, Olumide Oyedeji, praised the coaching clinic as a significant development for the growth of basketball in Nigeria. Enhancing the skills and knowledge of coaches is vital for the continued development of the sport in the country.

Looking ahead, Coach Chris Nomigo, Head Coach of the M2 Basketball Academy, hinted that the program will expand to Abuja in the near future, allowing coaches from the northern region to benefit from this valuable training opportunity.

This coaching clinic exemplifies the commitment of both local and international basketball figures to elevate the sport in Nigeria and empower coaches to nurture the next generation of basketball talent.
