Bamidele Emmanuel Begins New Chapter As Former Nigerian Sprint Star Makes UAE Debut In Style

Bamidele Emmanuel, the former Nigerian-born quarter-miler and standout NCAA indoor and outdoor champion, has officially begun his international career with the United Arab Emirates after completing a nationality switch that took effect on 10 August 2025.

The highly rated 400m runner, who dominated the collegiate circuit in the United States, is now eligible to represent the UAE in all international competitions — and his first outings have already shown why the country moved swiftly to secure his services.

Emmanuel opened his UAE chapter at the Brussels Diamond League Invitational, an event chosen to ease him back into elite global competition under a new flag. Despite the weight of expectation and the spotlight surrounding his switch, he delivered a composed and technically sharp performance that reassured UAE athletics officials they had acquired a world-class talent.

His momentum carried into the Islamic Solidarity Games, where he ran a strong 46.01 seconds in the 400 metres heat, finishing second behind Morocco’s Rachid M’hamdi, who clocked 45.53 seconds. Emmanuel crossed the line ahead of Iraq’s Taha Yaseen at 46.41 seconds and Saudi Arabia’s Musa Isah at 47.10 seconds, underlining his experience and competitive maturity.

Athletics analysts have noted that while Emmanuel’s time was not close to his personal best, his race execution — described as relaxed, controlled and purposeful — indicated that he is gradually settling into his new training regime and competitive environment. UAE coaches believe that with time, he will rediscover the explosive shape that once made him one of Nigeria’s most promising quarter-milers.

Emmanuel’s switch has sparked discussions across African athletics, particularly as Nigeria continues to lose top talent to other nations. For the UAE, however, his arrival signals a strategic step in bolstering their sprint programme ahead of the 2026 Asian Championships and other major events.

With a powerful start already recorded and more competitions ahead, Bamidele Emmanuel looks set to become one of the UAE’s most influential sprint names in the coming years.
