Team Nigeria (Boxing) has departed the country for Luanda, Angola, ahead of the 4th Africa Youth Games (AYG), which officially runs from December 10–20, 2025.
Nigeria will field a three-man squad at the continental multi-sport event, which brings together athletes aged 14 to 17 from 54 African nations.
Team Nigeria Boxing will compete in the
50kg and 70 kg men and will be repres Ted by
Abijuwon Faruk – 50kg- and Solomon Joshua – 70kg.
While Mayowa Ayomide is the sole representative of the country in the women catery and she will compete in the 48kg weight category.
The Games are designed to promote sports development, identify emerging talent, serve as qualifiers for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, and foster cultural exchange across the continent.
The Nigerian boxing contingent is led by the National Head Coach, Anthony Konyegwachi, who expressed confidence in his athletes’ readiness despite a relatively short training camp.
Boxing events at the AYG will begin on Monday, December 15, 2025.
Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, Coach Konyegwachi praised the dedication and discipline of the young boxers.
“My boxers are ready and well groomed. I prepared them thoroughly within the camping period, and they have been very impressive.
I believe, by God’s grace, we will bring back gold medals. They are fantastic boxers. Everything is in God’s hands. I drilled them morning and evening, except on Sundays. They are truly ready.”
Team Nigeria will hope for strong performances as the young boxers aim to make their mark on the continental stage.
