Team Nigeria closed the athletics programme of the 4th African Youth Games (AYG) in Angola with a strong second-place finish, ending the competition behind dominant South Africa but ahead of several continental rivals.

Nigeria recorded an impressive total of six gold and four silver medals, four of the gold medals came from the girls’ events, while the boys contributed two.

Although South Africa topped the table with 11 gold medals, Nigeria’s performance represented a clear step forward when measured against recent outings.

The result marks an improvement on the country’s showings at competitions such as the CAA U-18/U-20 Championships in Abeokuta and the Solidarity Games in Riyadh, where results—particularly in the boys’ events—were less convincing.

The Angolan campaign also strengthens Nigeria’s historical record at the African Youth Games.

Team Nigeria now maintains its position among the continent’s leading athletics nations at youth level, currently ranking fourth overall in AYG history with a cumulative haul of 18 gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals.

Egypt finished third on the medals table in Angola with five gold, three silver and two bronze medals, maintaining their steady presence among Africa’s traditional athletics powerhouses.

Beyond the medal standings, the Games highlighted the expanding depth of youth athletics across Africa.

A total of 19 countries reached the podium in Angola, an increase that reflects broader development across the continent.

While South Africa’s supremacy remains clear, Nigeria’s second-place finish offers renewed optimism of restoring lost glory in Athletics.
