Nigeria’s newest men’s 100 metres champion, Favour Ashe, has appealed to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for greater support as he targets success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Fresh from storming to victory at the Commonwealth Games Trials with a personal best and world-class time of 9.93 seconds, Ashe said the performance was the reward for years of perseverance despite difficult circumstances.

“I need all the support I can get from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria as I prepare for the Commonwealth Games,” Ashe said.

The Nigerian sprint star revealed that his journey back to the top has not been easy, admitting he has had to overcome several challenges in recent years.

According to Ashe, much of his preparation was done under difficult conditions while working tirelessly to regain top form.

“It’s been a struggle over the last few years trying to get myself back. I’ve been training in my local gym and doing everything possible to stay focused,” he added.

Having now secured qualification for the Commonwealth Games, Ashe believes additional support from the federation will allow him to compete on equal terms with the world’s best sprinters.

The 100m champion said access to better facilities, competitions and preparation will be crucial as he continues his development.

“Now that I’ve qualified, I hope to receive the backing I need to prepare properly and represent Nigeria well,” he stated.

Ashe’s impressive 9.93-second performance has established him as one of Team Nigeria’s leading medal prospects ahead of the Commonwealth Games, with the sprinter determined to build on his breakthrough season.
