As Gaiters Football Academy continues to impress at the ongoing Dana Cup in Denmark, 16-year-old midfielder Kelechi Ozioma says he is focused not on personal accolades, but on helping his team win and becoming a better player.
“Assists are good, but for me, it’s just the beginning,” the Lagos-born central midfielder said after registering five assists in two matches. “I came here to grow, to learn, and to help my team.”

Kelechi, a product of Provazios FC in Magodo, Lagos State, was specially invited to join Gaiters Football Academy for the prestigious tournament. His immediate impact has been impossible to ignore. In Gaiters’ 7–0 win earlier this week, he delivered three assists, and in their most recent outing, he added two more—making him the current top assist provider in the U17 category.
Described by coaches and teammates as a “magical No. 10,” Kelechi is praised for his vision, intelligence on the ball, and ability to control the tempo of the game. Yet, the young midfielder remains grounded.
“I don’t want to get carried away,” he said. “There’s still a lot to work on—my positioning, my decision-making, my strength. I’m grateful for how far I’ve come, but I know I have a long way to go.”
Officials from Gaiters Football Academy have commended his professionalism and maturity, pointing to his attitude as one of his greatest assets.
“Kelechi brings calm and class to the midfield,” said a team coach. “But what stands out most is his mindset. He plays to improve, not for applause.”
With more games ahead at the Dana Cup, Kelechi says his goal remains simple: to give his best, stay consistent, and prepare for what lies beyond the tournament.
“If I stay focused and keep doing the work, the right doors will open,” he added. “Right now, I just want to keep feeding my teammates and help the team win.”
From Lagos to Denmark, Kelechi Ozioma is proving that vision goes beyond the pitch—it starts with the mind.
