Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala has hailed the remarkable growth of women’s football across Africa, insisting the continent has made significant strides in recent years while stressing that even greater progress is still possible.
The six-time CAF African Women’s Player of the Year believes increased investment, improved organisation and greater opportunities for female footballers have transformed the women’s game, creating a more competitive landscape across the continent.
Having enjoyed a distinguished career with clubs in Nigeria, England, China and the United States, Oshoala says her experiences have given her a unique perspective on the evolution of women’s football in Africa.
“Women’s football in Africa has improved tremendously over the years. When you compare where we were years ago to where we are today, the progress is clear for everyone to see,” Oshoala said.
The former FC Barcelona Femení forward noted that more African players are now competing in Europe’s elite leagues, while national teams across the continent have become increasingly competitive at major international tournaments.
Despite the encouraging progress, Oshoala believes there is still work to be done to ensure the game reaches its full potential, particularly in areas such as grassroots development, infrastructure and investment in domestic leagues.
“We’re moving in the right direction, but we can’t stop here. If we continue to invest in the game and create more opportunities for young girls, African women’s football will reach even greater heights,” she added.
Oshoala has played a pivotal role in the growth of the women’s game, winning multiple UEFA Women’s Champions League titles with Barcelona while inspiring a new generation of African footballers through her achievements at club and international level.
With the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations approaching, Oshoala believes the continued rise of women’s football across the continent will make the competition one of the most competitive editions in its history, further showcasing Africa’s growing strength on the global stage.
