Having previously represented England in various age categories, including Under 17s, Under 19s, and Under 23s, Plumptre’s choice to declare for Nigeria in 2021 was driven by her familial ties, qualifying through her paternal grandfather.

In a candid interview with the BBC last year, Plumptre candidly discussed her mixed-race heritage, expressing that the assumption that she was white had been pervasive. This realization has propelled her to embrace her roots and heritage, leading her to feel a profound responsibility to represent the mixed-race community on the global stage.

“People have different reasons for wanting to play for a different country,” Plumptre stated. “I grew up playing for England, but it was more of a life decision than a football decision. I felt I had a responsibility to try to play for Nigeria if I could. That just came from experiences within my family. I used to coach an Under 12s team with mixed heritage girls and feel I have a responsibility to learn about my heritage.”

As the highly-anticipated World Cup showdown approaches, Plumptre’s journey from England to Nigeria stands as a testament to her identity and the sense of responsibility she carries on her shoulders. In the upcoming clash against England, she will proudly don the Nigerian jersey and exemplify her commitment to both her birth country and her chosen nation.
