Ashleigh Plumptre Extends Al Ittihad Contract, Says Saudi Move Was “The Best Decision Of My Career”

Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has expressed delight after signing a contract extension with Al Ittihad Ladies, describing her time in Saudi Arabia as one of the most rewarding experiences of her football career.

The 26-year-old, who joined the Jeddah-based club in 2023, revealed that staying on was an easy decision, citing the club’s professionalism, ambition, and vision for women’s football as key reasons behind her commitment.

“Extending my contract with Al Ittihad means a lot to me,” Plumptre said. “From the first day I arrived, I’ve been treated with respect, not just as a footballer but as a person. I believe deeply in the project we’re building here.”

Plumptre’s move to Saudi Arabia initially drew criticism, with some questioning her choice to play in a region where women’s football is still developing. However, the defender insists that the decision has helped her grow both professionally and personally.

“Coming here was about more than football. It’s about being part of something new, something meaningful,” she explained. “The passion, professionalism, and structure at Al Ittihad are impressive — there are even lessons some big European clubs could learn from.”

The Nigerian international, who played a crucial role in the Super Falcons’ run at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, also expressed gratitude to those who have supported her journey — including her close friend, England international Chloe Kelly, who publicly backed her decision to move to Saudi Arabia.

“Chloe has always been supportive,” Plumptre said. “She understood why I made this move and encouraged me to follow my heart. I’m proud of that choice.”

Since joining Al Ittihad, Plumptre has become one of the standout defenders in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, helping to raise the profile of Nigerian players abroad and inspiring young girls across Africa and the Middle East to pursue football.

“I’m proud to represent Nigeria everywhere I go,” she concluded. “This is just the beginning — and I’m excited for what’s next.”
