Arthur Okonkwo Stops Daryl Dike’s Shot, Beaten By Josh Maja’s Penalty

It was a hectic battle among three players of Nigerian origin, as Arthur Okonkwo again twinkled in goal for Wrexham in their English Championship fixture away to West Bromwich Albion, who featured Daryl Dike and Josh Maja in their attack.

Sports247 reports that two major highpoints of the game occurred when Maja slotted home a penalty past Okonkwo, after 38 minutes at The Hawthorns, but the goalie later stopped Dike one-on-one.

Okonkwo, who has pledged his international allegiance to Nigeria and is waiting a final clearance from England’s Football Association, was at his best once again for the visiting team from Wales, and his efforts proved to be very valuable.

Such it was that Okonkwo’s side had to storm back from two goals down to earn what could yet be a crucial point in their quest to reach the Championship play-offs with an entertaining 2-2 draw against The Baggies.

The hosts started on the front foot and got a slice of fortune midway through the first half, as Price’s free-kick took a deflection off Wrexham midfielder, Dobson before beating Okonkwo at the goalkeeper’s near post.

West Brom doubled their advantage before half-time, as Maja converted from the penalty spot, following Issa Kabore’s foul on Jayson Molumby, but Okonkwo’s side dramatically improved in the second half to pull both goals back.

Maja calmly knocked his spot-kick very low to Okonkwo’s right and put West Brom in control going into the break, with the former Super Eagles’ striker netting what became his fifth goal of the season across all competitions.

Following a relentless spell of Wrexham pressure, Morrison’s side regrouped late on and had a glorious opening to score a third late winner in the 89th minute, but Okonkwo did pretty well to deny Nigerian compatriot Dike at point-blank range.

The draw stretched West Brom’s unbeaten run to five matches and ensured they sit four points above relegation zone, while Wrexham climb one place to sixth, a point ahead of their next opponent, Southampton, who have a game in hand.
