APC Youth Leader Dayo Israel Hails D’Tigress’ Historic Fifth AfroBasket Win, Says “Our Youth Are Making Us Proud”

Dayo Israel, National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has issued a full-throated commendation of Nigeria’s D’Tigress, who clinched a record-breaking fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title yesterday in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, defeating Mali 78–64 in the final .

This landmark victory came just after the Super Falcons claimed their record 10th WAFCON trophy and Team Nigeria’s armwrestlers triumphed at the African championship in Abuja—a trifecta that, according to Israel, underscores the immense potential of Nigerian youth.

“From the football pitch to the basketball court and even in competitive armwrestling, Nigerian youth are writing a new chapter in our nation’s story,” Israel said. “Yesterday, D’Tigress stood tall in Abidjan and reminded us that resilience, teamwork, and heart are the Nigerian way.”

He praised Nigeria’s dominance over Mali, highlighting how the team overcame a 26–21 first-quarter deficit to draw level at halftime and then extend their unbeaten streak to 29 consecutive AfroBasket wins dating back to 2015 .

Israel specifically acknowledged the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, crediting his support through the Renewed Hope Agenda as instrumental in empowering female athletes:

“Mr President, your unwavering backing of sports—especially grassroots programmes and team initiatives like those of the Falcons and D’Tigress—is empowering young Nigerians to dream bigger and achieve more,” he added.

He also celebrated D’Tigress’ star performers:

Ezinne Kalu led all scorers with 20 points,

Amy Okonkwo added 19 points and 9 rebounds, earning MVP honours for a second straight AfroBasket championship.

Israel used the victory as a rallying cry:

“Let’s not just applaud from the stands—let’s invest, empower, and build infrastructure that will help these young champions keep winning. They aren’t just athletes—they are ambassadors of Nigeria’s future.”

In closing, Israel urged all Nigerians—especially youth, policymakers, and sports patrons—to support women’s sports with renewed energy:

“D’Tigress have shown that when opportunity meets preparation, triumph follows. It’s up to us to provide that platform continuously.”

Nigeria’s continued excellence across multiple sports has unified the nation in celebration and sparked optimism that this is truly a golden era for women’s sports in Nigeria
