The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released a 15-athlete list for the 20th edition of the World Athletics Championships scheduled for September 13–21, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan.
Conspicuously absent from the squad is Nigeria’s top female 200m sprinter, Favour Ofili, who has reportedly initiated a switch of allegiance to Turkey, a claim yet to be officially addressed by the AFN.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, Team Nigeria will feature seven female and eight male athletes competing in 11 events, including the men’s and women’s 100m, women’s 100m hurdles, men’s 200m, men’s 400m, men’s 400m hurdles, men’s and women’s long jump, men’s shot put, women’s discus, and women’s hammer throw.
Leading the pack is 100m hurdles world record holder Oluwatobi Amusan, Olympic bronze medalist Ese Brume (long jump), rising 400m hurdles star Nathaniel Ezekiel, and experienced shot put thrower Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.
Others named include Rosemary Chukwuma (100m women), Prestina Ochonogor (long jump women), Chioma Onyekwere Lyons and Obiageri Amaechi (discus women), Oyesade Olatoye (hammer women), Kayinsola Ajayi and Israel Okon (100m men), Udodi Onwuzurike (200m men), Samuel Ogazi and Chidi Okezie (400m men), and Charles Godfred (long jump men).
AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, said the selection was strictly based on merit and World Athletics qualification standards.
He expressed confidence that the athletes would represent the nation with pride in Tokyo.
Chief Okowa also commended coaches, sponsors, government agencies, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the athletes’ development, assuring that the federation would continue to roll out more programmes to advance the growth of athletics in Nigeria.
