Beijing 2008 Olympic silver medalist Ambrose Vanzekin has urged Nigerian sports authorities to begin preparations early for the next Olympic Games, stressing that last-minute arrangements have repeatedly cost the country strong performances on the global stage.
Speaking on Nigeria’s Olympic ambitions, Vanzekin said the nation has enough raw talent to compete favourably, but warned that poor planning and rushed selections close to tournaments often undermine athletes’ chances.

“Nigeria has the talent, there is no doubt about that,” Vanzekin said. “But we keep making the same mistake of waiting until the competition is close before putting a team together.”
The former goalkeeper emphasized the need to start building a solid Olympic team well in advance, allowing athletes adequate time to train, bond and prepare mentally for the demands of the Games.
“Olympics preparation should start now, not months to the event,” he added. “If we want to avoid past mistakes, we must plan early, support our athletes properly and give them the best chance to succeed.”|
Vanzekin believes that early planning, structured camps and sustained investment will significantly improve Nigeria’s medal prospects when the next Olympic Games come around.
