Fulham of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi will receive a special commendation from Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to mark his 100th international cap for the Super Eagles, before they tackle Portugal in a friendly on Wednesday.
Sports247 reports that exciting, memorable and emotional scenes are bound to unfold during Iwobi’s induction inside the main bowl of 29,000-capacity Estádio Dr Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria – a city halfway between Lisbon and Porto.
Nigeria’s officials hinted during the Eagles’ last training session that a short on-field ceremony will take place before kick-off to commemorate Iwobi’s centenary, after which he is expected ‘to exert dominion in the middle’ against Portugal.
The former Arsenal and Everton of England star will join the fray, as Nigeria’s Eagles try to exert revenge on Roberto Martinez’s World Cup-bound stars, who defeated the three-time African champions 4-0 when they last battled.
Iwobi will link forces with Eagles’ captain, Wilfred Onyinye Ndidi alongside any of Frank Onyeka, Tochukwu Nnadi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika in the middle of the pack during Wednesday’s game, which commences at 8.45pm.
The 30-year-old dazzler, who represented England at youth level before switching his allegiance to Nigeria in 2015, said he has no regrets about his decision, despite not winning the Africa Cup of Nations and missing two straight editions of the World Cup.
“I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria. Yes, I would have loved to win the AFCON and be at the FIFA World Cup that is about to kick off, but no regrets,” Iwobi asserted.
