Alex Iwobi Clears the Air on Hotel Controversy, Says Super Eagles Are ‘Comfortable and Focused’ Ahead of Playoffs

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has dismissed rumours suggesting that the Nigerian national team was lodged in substandard accommodation in Morocco ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against Gabon.

The speculation began after a short video posted on Iwobi’s social media went viral, showing what appeared to be an old building outside his hotel window. Fans quickly jumped to conclusions, claiming that the team was being housed in poor conditions — sparking heated debate online.

However, Iwobi has now clarified the situation, insisting that the post was taken out of context and that the team is staying in a perfectly comfortable facility.

“It was just a misunderstanding,” Iwobi said. “People saw a video and assumed the worst. The truth is, we are fine. The hotel is good, and everyone is focused on the game ahead.”

The Fulham midfielder emphasised that the team’s attention remains solely on securing qualification for the World Cup and urged fans to ignore distractions.

“We’ve had a great atmosphere in camp, and the focus is 100 percent on the playoffs,” he added. “These are massive games for us and for Nigeria. We want to give everything on the pitch.”

Sources within the camp also confirmed that the hotel, located near the Complexe Sportif Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, was vetted and approved by both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and FIFA officials as part of standard pre-match arrangements.

Iwobi’s clarification comes as a relief to fans after a week filled with off-field distractions, including reports of a brief training boycott over unpaid bonuses.

As Nigeria prepares to take on Gabon in the first leg of the playoffs, Iwobi called for unity and belief:

“We know what’s at stake. We appreciate the support from Nigerians everywhere, and we’ll do everything to make the country proud.”

With tensions easing and preparations back on track, the Super Eagles will now aim to let their football do the talking when they take the field in Rabat.
