Akwa United Chief Bassey aims dig at Plateau Chairman

Akwa United Chairman, Paul Bassey has aimed a dig at his counterpart in Plateau United over the ultimatum to players and the directive to halve salaries over the team’s performance in this season’s NPFL.

Plateau United, who are now Coached by former Akwa United gaffer Abdul Maikaba, have been battling relegation this season, despite winning the league two seasons ago.

The situation prompted a flurry of decisions by the financier, Plateau State Government, with approval of the club hierarchy to place players on half salary and some assistant coaches on sack watch.

Speaking to Sports247 Bassey described the situation as ironical and suggested, as chairman of a club, rather mete it out on the players, the chairman should take responsibility.

‘The situation of Maikaba should tell you something about the environment; the stability of the environment, the welfare of the players.

‘ I read somewhere, sometime that the Players of Plateau United have been put on half salary because they’ve not done well.

‘We don’t panic; even at the time, we were rock bottom. Why would I ask the chairman or justify to suspend my coach, when I know that I’m also in it, I can as well suspend myself.

We went in house look at what we could do; stability, and that’s where we are,’ he explained.
