Akpeyi’s Clash With SuperSport United Shifted

Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi has found out that his new club’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash with SuperSport United is among the fixtures shifted on account of a request by he national team’s coach, Stuart Baxter.

Sports247.ng learnt that, in a bid to ensure his side qualify behind Nigeria in the race to Egypt 2019 Africa Cup of Nations this summer, Baxter has asked for a handful of matches to be postponed, in order not to distract his players.

Subsequently, Akpeyi is affected by the waiver, as his side’s encounter with SuperSport United on March 16 will get a new date, along with the matches between Bloemfontein Celtic at home to leaders Bidvest Wits and Polokwane City play at Cape Town City a day later.

South Africa are two points above Libya in second place in Group E but if they lose will crash out in an embarrassing setback. Nigeria have already secured top place in the group and their berth at the finals in Egypt.

It means Baxter and all the home-based players can fly to Tunisia at least one week before their match against Libya, which is set for Sfax, after the PSL agreed to postpone three games which all involve national team players, so he can make invitations outside the FIFA window for the tie.

Baxter said: “We are going to get there as quickly as possible. Whatever shenanigans we might have to face.
“Let’s get that over and done with sooner rather than later. We’ll deal with it and acclimatise.
“It will be a smaller group at the beginning, not the whole squad but I still think that is preferable to what we would usually get.”
