The match began at a frantic pace, with early controversy shaping proceedings. In the 22nd minute, Athletic Bilbao thought they had taken the lead when Aitor Paredes inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out due to a reckless foul by Nemanja Gudelj in the build-up, much to the disappointment of the away supporters.
Athletic Bilbao capitalised on the reprieve and struck first in the 40th minute. Raúl Navarro finished confidently to put the visitors ahead, silencing the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium and giving Athletic a deserved lead based on their pressing and organisation.
Sevilla responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Gonzalo “Peque” García restored parity with a well-taken effort, converting a precise assist from Jesús Sánchez to make it 1–1 before the break.
The decisive moment came in the second half. In the 56th minute, Sevilla were awarded a penalty after sustained pressure inside the Athletic area.
Akor Adams stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Sevilla a 2–1 lead.
The Nigerian striker’s composure under pressure proved crucial, as Sevilla defended resolutely in the closing stages to see out the win.
Adams’ goal not only secured all three points but also highlighted his growing importance to Sevilla’s attacking setup.
