Ajilore: Super Eagles Must Be Ruthless Despite Tanzania Win

Former Nigeria international Femi Ajilore has praised the Super Eagles for opening their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2–1 victory over Tanzania but insists the team must be far more ruthless in front of goal if they are to go deep in the tournament.

Reacting to Nigeria’s Group C opener in Fès, Morocco, Ajilore acknowledged the importance of securing three points in the first match but expressed concern over the number of chances wasted by the team.

“It’s a good win, especially for the first game, but Nigeria should have scored more goals,” Ajilore said.

The former midfielder noted that Tanzania posed little threat for large periods of the game and believes the Super Eagles missed an opportunity to send a strong message to the rest of the tournament.

“Tanzania were not really a big threat to Nigeria. I expected more goals from the Super Eagles,” he added.

Ajilore explained that converting chances early in tournaments can ease pressure and boost confidence for the rest of the campaign.

“When you score more goals in your opening game, it helps announce your arrival and gives the team confidence going forward,” he said.

Nigeria dominated possession and created several clear-cut opportunities, with Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman scoring either side of Tanzania’s equaliser. However, Ajilore believes the scoreline flattered the Taifa Stars.

“This game should have been more comfortable for Nigeria. They had enough chances to put it beyond doubt,” he stated.

Despite his criticism, Ajilore commended the team for responding well after conceding and regaining the lead quickly.

“The response after conceding was good. That shows character,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Ajilore warned that tougher opponents will punish wastefulness in front of goal.

“As the tournament progresses, teams will be stronger. You won’t always get this many chances,” he cautioned.

Nigeria will face Tunisia national football team in their next Group C fixture, a match Ajilore believes will require a higher level of efficiency.

“The next game will be tougher. Nigeria must be clinical,” he concluded.

With three points secured, the Super Eagles have made a positive start — but Ajilore’s message is clear: winning is good, but ruthlessness will define how far Nigeria go at AFCON 2025.
